HISTORY:

For most of the history of the world, things went as smoothly as things go in a DND world.  The gods were loved by the races who followed them.  Clerics were, generally speaking, good to the people who followed their gods.  Yes, there were their occasionally bad clerics, but nothing that really made for a bad world.

Then, about 18 years ago, things started going weird for citizens of the world.  No one understood what was going on for many years.  The gods would very rarely respond to anything their worshipers asked for in prayer.  Or, if they did respond, it was more likely to be in a way that made you wish they had not responded.

Then 10 years ago, everything changed.  Before this point, none of the gods were openly working against people of the world.  However, now, they were openly trying to destroy life.  The largest city in the world was destroyed in the fateful battle that started the worst of it all.  Only about five percent of the population survived this battle.  Three whole armies were wiped out.  And the best farm lands is now under sea water.  This became known as the fight at Hell’s Range.

After this, five mortals took the war to the gods.  This became known as the Time of Hell.  Although, some are calling it the War of the Gods.  It took two years for the war to end.  Only two of the old gods remained.  Neither of the two were affected by what caused the other gods to go insane. The five mortals and the two old gods are now a new pantheon.

Eight years have now passed since the end of the war.  Things are now starting to look up for the world, but it is not to where it once was at, yet.   The chief god has spent the last eight years looking for answers to a family crisis that occurred during the war.  He also is spreading word about what has changed.  The other six gods have spent this time trying to help the world recover.  It has been a slow, and often painful recovery.

There are those who have recognized the new pantheon.  There are also those who have refused to recognize the new pantheon.  However, these are few.  They are getting fewer and fewer, because they have no power coming from the gods.  A few others simply follow the old gods, simply because they have not heard what has changed.

Recently, survivors got together for a memorial to all those who died in the fight.  More specifically though, it was the ten year anniversary of the fight at Hell’s Range.  Five days have now passed since this event.

THE NEW PANTHEON:

Those who ascended from mortality:

Hawk:   Chief god of the new pantheon.  Originally human.  Carries a wizards staff with him at all times, even though he was a rogue.  He lost the most in the war of the group.

Rideyr:  Original leader of the party, he was a Half-Elf.  He was a cleric.

Hjalduhr:          Dwarven fighter among the original group.  He always loved a fight, but even he did not lie the war.

Yanvar: Halfling sorcerer of the original group.  No one really knows much about his background.  Other than Hawk, he lost the most of the group.

Jens:     Human Paladin of the original group.  He was the most affected by the betrayal of the gods.  He always believed there was a way for things to work themselves out.

Those who did not turn against mortals:

Selune, goddess of the moon

  • Suggested Domain: Knowledge, Life
  • Symbol: Pair of eyes surrounded by seven stars

A combination of the slavic Zorya, and various moon goddesses throughout various faiths, Selune changes with the phases of the moon. Each of her aspects watch over the world below, and her dominion spreads over all that is touched by the light of the moon.

Beshaba, goddess of misfortune

  • Suggested Domain: Trickery
  • Symbol: Black antlers

Beshaba is set upon destroying her sister Tymora. Her portfolio of mischief, misfortune, accidents and bad luck are worshipped by many, although most of this worship is inspired by fear. Many of her adventurous followers took on roles of assassins, bringing misfortune to others.

Options:

Any race is okay.  However, some are more likely to have visited lands where the campaign will start.  I am willing to work with anyone who wants something unusual.  Although divine spell casters are more than welcome, clerics and paladins are not the most trusted people after what happened.  If you wish to play a follower of one of the old gods, don’t expect to be able to do most divine options.  Once again I am willing to work to figure something out though.

Humans, Elves, Half-Elves, Dwarves and Halflings were all hit hard as hell.  Elves were hit the hardest of these, although humans were not far behind, numbers wise.  Orcs almost went extinct, but this was more because they fought with the old gods.  A lot of people retaliated against them after the war ended.  If not for the intervention of Hawk, they would have been wiped out entirely.  Most orcs that remain are half-orcs, instead of full blooded orcs.
